How Paul Guarded The Flock

As I made my way through Paul's letters, I saw, once again, that he was a missionary-apostle (church planter), a theologian, a developer of leaders. But most important, Paul was a shepherd-pastor. He clearly understood-like the shepherd of Psalm 23-the significance of congregational feeding and protection. Here's how Paul practiced what he preached about guarding the flock.
  1. Affirming: quick to identify evidences of God's work in persons and peoples;
  2. Thankful: ready to express gratitude for any act of generosity;
  3. Corrective: never reluctant to identify sin and rebuke it;
  4. Prophetic: warning of consequences if people were bent on making bad choices;
  5. Instructive: enlarging the theological base of peoples' faith;
  6. Protective: quick to defend those who were vulnerable;
  7. Transparent: unashamed to speak of his own weaknesses and sins;
  8. Affectionate: anxious for people to know how much he loved them;
  9. Prayerful: frequently praying "aloud" in his letters for people and their needs;
  10. Developmental: identifying, raising up those who might become leaders;
  11. Observable: presenting a model of the Christ-following life that others could copy.
- Gordon MacDonald -

Ongoing Global Reality Check

It is difficult to get our minds and hearts around the state of the world today. The statistics and numbers sometimes numb us and we begin to feel helpless. Instead, we want to allow these realities to move us with God’s compassion and align our hearts with His heart and His purposes in this age.

We can’t change everything yet we want to be moved by the Holy Spirit to engage with Him toward what He is asking of us. Let’s be attentive to His still small voice as we continue to consider the reality of the world today.

What is the situation among the world’s poor today?
1.  In the last 30 years the developing world has been improving as much as the industrialized world did during the 19th Century
2.  The number of people living on less than $1 USD a day fell by 400 million since 1970 but was unchanged in the 1990’s
3.  1 in 5 people in the world do not have access to basic social services like healthcare, education, clean drinking water and sufficient nutrition
4.  Women account for 70% of the world’s poor and 2/3’d of the world’s illiterate population
5.  The nations with the lowest human development ratings include Sierra Leone, Niger, Chad and Mali

How about food?
1.  Every night 800 million people go to bed hungry, most of these being women and children
2.  In Africa, 34% is under-nourished, in Asia 16%.
3.  There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Civil strife and war are the primary cause of hunger
4.  The same number of people are now undernourished in the west due to eating the wrong kinds of foods as are undernourished in the developing world
5.  Nations where over half of the population is undernourished include Somalia, Burundi, Afghanistan, Eritrea
Do people have water to drink?
1.  55 countries, together consisting of about 1 billion people, lack access to clean water
2.  The United Nations is saying that wars will be fought in the next 25 years over access to water
3.  The world is not running out of water. The problem is the combination of water quantity, location and access
4.   Africa is most at risk due to population growth

How is the world’s health?
1.  Infectious diseases kill more people every year than natural disasters
2.  Tuberculosis, a disease once in decline, is now on the rise again
3.  50 million people have developed strains of TB now resistant to existing drugs
4.  Since 1945 over 145 million people have died from HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and malaria
5.  The developing world suffers from 90% of the disease burden but only has 10% of the global resources which go to health

Are people remaining in their countries or migrating?
1.   Over 150 million people live outside the country of their birth. This is primarily driven by economic need
2.   Over 55 million Chinese live outside the China mainland
3.   22 million Indians live outside of India
4.   Migration is generally from the poorer southern nations to the more prosperous north
5.  People living outside of their homelands send back $75 Billion USD to their home nations each year
6.  The primary economic unit is the extended family
7.  The Muslim world is sending people all over the world as Muslim missionaries. They come to new countries as students, scholars and refugees

Ron Edmondson on Ways to Gain and Keep Trust as a Leader

Here are ways to gain and keep trust as a leader:

1. Always display confidence, but never cockiness.
People will trust a competent leader, but one who is arrogant will be dismissed quickly.

2. Always follow through, so don’t over-commit.
When a leader does what he or she says they will, people gain trust. When the leader always bails on responsibility, people begin to doubt everything the leader says.

3. Always put trust in others, so they’ll put trust in you.
Trust is a mutually exclusive commodity. People won’t extend you trust they don’t feel they receive from you. Always extend grace, but be firm in some non-negotiables. (I wrote mine HERE) We need to allow people the freedom make their own way, including the freedom to fail, make mistakes, and be assured we will forgive them if needed. We should have, however, some standards which are not open to discussion. Those should usually be issues of character, vision or values.

4. Always try to be knowledgeable and aware by constantly learning, but realize you don’t know everything and you’ll know far more with a team.
People trust a teachable leader. They are leery of a leader who knows it all…or pretends they do.

5. Always exhibit humility, but take great pride in your work. A humble, but diligent and effective leader is a trusted leader. It’s as simple as that.

6. Always value people more than you value progress.
This is especially difficult for driven leaders, but people trust people they trust care for them.

7. What other ways would you add to gain and keep trust as a leader?

Three Challenging Words for Preaching

There are three words I always try to remember when I am preaching a sermon series.
They are words you must wrestle with in sermon preparation, especially in longer sermon series. Each word comes from my experience and various preaching workshops I have attended through the years. There is nothing easy about preaching. It takes both work and time. Each week I do my best to be prepared to present God’s word. There is no excuse for not being prepared. These three words help me to be prepared. Each word comes with its own challenge.

The first word is attractive
The second word is accountable
The third word is action.                      -- Russ Adams --

Putting Out Fires without Getting Burned

Dyton L. Owen  Nov 4, 2012
The contention that leadership begins and ends not simply with doing the right things, but with understanding who I am. Six principles are laid as what follows:
1. Peace and progress are incompatible.
2. We must possess a slightly higher tolerance to pain than those being led.
3. It is not “survival of the fittest,” but survival of the most adaptable
4. We promote change not by our will, but by our presence.
5. When a crisis arises, put on your own oxygen mask first.
6. No system will ever be healthier than its head.

Mark Twain / Mother Teresa / St. Augustine

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.                                                     Mark Twain

People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.                      St. Augustine

Quotes on Mission

1.  Mission is, quite simply, the participation of Christians in the liberating mission of Jesus, wagering on a future that verifiable experience seems to belie. It is the good news of God's love, incarnated in the witness of a community, for the sake of the world.
2.  Our mission has not life of its own: only in the hands of the sending God can it truly be called mission. Not least since the missionary initiative comes from God alone.
3.  Protestants, in particular, are challenged...with respect to their overly pragmatic mission structures, their tendency to portray mission almost exclusively in verbalist categories, and the absence of missionary spirituality in their churches, which often drastically impoverishes all their commendable efforts in the area of social justice .

Martin Luther’s Morning Prayer

Lord God,

           You have called your servants
                   to ventures of which we cannot see the ending,
                   by paths as yet untrodden,
                   through perils unknown.

           Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go,
                   but only that your hand is leading us
                   and your love supporting us;

                                                           through Jesus Christ our Lord.
