Think For Yourself - Before It's Too Late...

"Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another." Nelson Mandela

The 44 Master Moves of Remarkable Entrepreneurs

Robin Sharma 1. They get that the #1 way to build a global brand is one customer at a time. 2. They obsess around having an impact vs. growing their income (and so their income soars). 3. They listen more than they speak. And they deliver more than they promise. 4. They use their most valuable hours to do their most valuable work (don’t check email first thing in the morning). 5. They get that you can’t have an A-level company if you hire B-level people. 6. They are deeply aware that jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to Mastery. And so they fearlessly pour their Genius into the world. 7. They understand that what the amateur calls genius, the professional calls practice. 8. They are fanatics around building a systems-driven company. Everything has a system built around it. 9. They trust their vision when everyone else is doubting their vision. 10. They provoke their teammates to do work they never imagined they could do. 11. They know that good enough just isn’t good enough. Outright perfection is their ideal. 12. They have discovered that extra hard work is Success’ true best friend. 13. They use flight time to get ahead and review their plans vs. playing Angry Birds and watching bad movies. 14. They get that progress often shows up in failure’s clothing. 15. They invest deeply in their education and development knowing that the fastest way to double your net worth is to triple your rate of learning. 16. They focus on value versus cost. 17. They hold themselves to performance + ethical standards higher than anyone could ever expect of them. 18. They make the time to think, plan and prepare – understanding that clarity breeds mastery. And there’s no point in brilliantly executing the wrong things. 19. They get that their 3 most valuable assets are their mental focus, physical energy and internal creativity. And so they protect them ferociously. 20. They are “Apple-like” in their willingness to think differently and ensure their products leave customers breathless. 21. They get that either you disrupt the status quo in your industry (and within your life), or you will be disrupted. And it will hurt. 26. They spend their days doing real work versus fake work. And getting important things done versus being really busy being busy. 27. They know that if they’re not frightened a lot they’re not achieving a lot. 28. They work hard to craft a high-performance culture, understanding that the culture of the organization stages the performance of its people. 30. They are more fascinated in building a company that will endure the generations than an enterprise that is hot for a few quarters. Iconic is their obsession. 31. They get that failure is the foundation of innovation. 32. They are acutely aware that the winning formula that made their company successful just might be the one that makes their company obsolete. And so they break what works. And stay foolish and hungry. 33. They deliver results versus voice rationalizations. 34. They view angry customers as breathtakingly great opportunities to create fanatical fans. 35. They know that if people are not laughing at your 24 Month Magnificent Obsession (More on that and all these ideas at The Remarkable Entrepreneur SuperConference 2012 in Toronto, Canada June 2+3 – see below for details to grab a seat while you can – I really want to help you win this year!), you have the wrong vision. 36. They are good at starting things. And even better at finishing them. 42. They get that confidence grows via the doing of difficult things. And so they pursue discomfort. 43. They identify themselves as virtuosos. Best in World is the only place they play. 44. They bravely donate their lives to a cause larger than themselves. And in this way transform the world through their presence.

Seven Habits of Highly Ineffective Leaders

Steven James ON Time-tested practices to ensure complete and utter failure 1 - Don't plan ahead Don't fall into the trap of writing down your goals and objectives, or even worse, handcuffing yourself to specific times when you're supposed to feel obligated to do them. Instead, respond to things as they come up. Put off big projects until you have large chunks of uninterrupted time to accomplish them, or when you feel inspired. Then try to complete the task with one herculean effort. 2 - Go it alone 獨當一面 If you need to have someone checking up on you, it's a sure sign of your incompetence and lack of self-control. Independent- minded people make the most progress when they bypass the team and do their own thing. Accountability is overrated. Only arrogant people set lofty goals. Those who dream big often end up flat on their face. At the end of the day, it's much better to aim for mediocrity and reach your goal rather than trying to do something extraordinary, and becoming frustrated when you can't quite accomplish it. Better safe than sorry. Those who risk the most never experience the security of living in the status quo. 4 - Point out the mistakes of others People need to be aware of their failures or they'll never be able to change. So, keep an eye out for others' missteps or mishaps and then leak the word to the rest of your employees or volunteers. Be specific and stern. Don't give the person a chance to explain his actions since that's usually just a way of denial or shirking responsibility. It's even more beneficial to make the shortcomings of others public, so that other people in the organization can keep them in line. 5 - Mentally relive old failures If you lost a job or got a demotion or didn't get the position you were vying for, brood over it. Dwelling on past mistakes, unresolved conflict, and ongoing disagreements will help give you perspective on your current situation. Obsessing over negative experiences helps you avoid them in the future. Get into the habit of thinking about hurtful conversations you've had and coming up with things you wish you'd said, or clever comebacks that might've ended things right then and there. It'll give you that fire and motivation to speak up more authoritatively next time around. 6 - Wait until the last minute You never know what the future holds so why waste your time doing things that might not even end up being necessary? Who knows, you might get fired, quit, or die and you'd just have wasted all of that time on that project. It's much more beneficial if you just put off working on something until the consequences of not doing it outweigh the effort it takes to do it. If other people hassle you about this, it just shows that they're not as good at working under pressure as you are. 7 - Take things personally 對號入座 If people criticize your work, they are, in essence, attacking you. Criticism of a project you've worked on is a direct assault on your intelligence, personality, and character. As a matter of self-respect, it's important that you don't let them get away with that. If you don't stand up for yourself, you might come across as a pushover. So, show your strength and conviction by defending every idea you have. Rather than "choosing your battles," remember that if someone criticizes your decisions, actions, or suggestions, they've already chosen to attack your personal self-worth. Don't let them get away with that.

Go ahead ! The road is in front of you.

QUOTES TO LEAD WITH

"The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas." ~ Linus Pauling "The great thing in this world is not so much where you are but in what direction you are moving."~ Oliver Wendell Holmes "Persistent people begin their success where others end in failure."~ Edward Eggleston "Life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations." -George Bernard Shaw

SIMPLIFY THEN FOCUS

Henry David Thoreau shouted “Simplify. Simplify. Simplify” in his breathtakingly good book “Walden”. Nice point. One of the primary reasons that people and organizations fail to get to greatness is that they try to be too many things to too many people. I'll use the Confucius quote I often use here: “Man who chases two rabbits catches neither.” The most successful human beings are wildly focused. They have a very clear picture of what it is they want to create by the time they reach the end of their lives and then they have the discipline (and courage) to stick to their mission – saying “no” to everything that is not mission critical. So my gentle suggestion to you is to simplify your life. Strip away all that is unimportant – these are the things keeping you from getting to your dreams. And then once you do your clean up, focus, focus, focus. You'll be surprised how good you will then get at being great. ROBIN SHARMA'S LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOR STUNNING SUCCESS page18

BBC's comment as below. CY Leung elected Hong Kong's new leader CY Leung's background as son of a policeman was in stark contrast to that of his wealthy rival Henry Tang Self-made businessman CY Leung has been chosen as Hong Kong's new leader after an unusually turbulent campaign. He was elected by a committee of 1,200 business leaders and other influential citizens, mostly loyal to Beijing. The Chinese government switched its support to Mr Leung late in the campaign after a string of scandals rocked early frontrunner Henry Tang. Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters gathered outside the convention centre where the vote took place. The tumultuous campaign has fuelled calls by pro-democracy activists for Hong Kong's 7.1 million residents to be able to directly elect their own leader, something China has promised will happen in 2017. Gaffes and scandalsMr Leung, 57, was declared Hong Kong's new chief executive after securing 689 votes. With most of the votes counted, Henry Tang had 285 and pro-democracy candidate Albert Ho 76, election officials said. Before the vote, Mr Leung had told reporters he would work hard to "get rid of people's negative perception about this election". The son of a policeman, he had originally been seen as having only an outside chance of securing the leadership. But Beijing's early choice, Mr Tang, was wounded by a series of gaffes and scandals. The heir to a textile fortune confessed to cheating on his wife and building an illegal underground basement, which was reported to have housed an entertainment suite, jacuzzi and wine cellar. Mr Ho's outspoken pro-democracy stance meant he was widely seen as being unacceptable to Beijing. Mr Leung will replace Donald Tsang, who served two terms and could not run for the post again. Hong Kong, a British colony until 1997, has been enjoying high degree of autonomy from Beijing. But Communist leaders in Beijing have resisted public pressure for full democracy in Hong Kong.

World Water Day

There are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and another 2 billion are expected to join by 2050. Statistics say that each of us drinks from 2 to 4 litres of water every day, however most of the water we ‘drink’ is embedded in the food we eat: producing 1 kilo of beef for example consumes 15,000 litres of water while 1 kilo of wheat ’drinks up’ 1,500 litres. When a billion people in the world already live in chronic hunger and water resources are under pressure we cannot pretend the problem is ‘elsewhere’. Coping with population growth and ensuring access to nutritious food to everyone call for a series of actions we can all help with:follow a healthier, sustainable diet;consume less water-intensive products;reduce the scandalous food wastage: 30% of the food produced worldwide is never eaten and the water used to produce it is definitively lost!produce more food, of better quality, with less water.

Seven Questions for New Converts in an Asian Country

Matthew 5:10-12 Matthew 10:16-25 Matthew 23:24 Luke 6:22 John 15:18-20 John 16:2 John 17:14 Acts 5:40 Romans 6:1-11 2 Corinthians 4:9-13 1 Thessalonians 3:4 2 Timothy 3:12 1 Peter 2:20-21 1 Peter 3:14 1 Peter 4:12-16 Asian Access (or A2), a Christian missions agency in South Asia, listed a series of questions that church planters must ask new believers who are considering baptism. (Due to safety concerns, Asian Access does not mention the country's name.) The country is predominantly Hindu, but over the past few decades Christianity has grown in popularity—especially among poor and tribal peoples. These are the seven questions asked to help determine a new convert's readiness to follow Christ: Are you willing to leave home and lose the blessing of your father? Are you willing to lose your job? Are you willing to go to the village and those who persecute you, forgive them, and share the love of Christ with them? Are you willing to give an offering to the Lord? Are you willing to be beaten rather than deny your faith? Are you willing to go to prison? Are you willing to die for Jesus? If the new convert answers yes to all of these questions, then A2 leaders invite that person to sign on the bottom of the paper that of their own free will they have decided to follow Jesus. But here's the risk: if a new convert signs the paper and is caught by the government, he or she will spend three years behind bars. The one who did the evangelizing faces six years in prison.

A good piece on our Identity

This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham... Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. Matthew 1:1, 17 The growth industry in genealogy magazines and books designed to help people trace their family tree, along with the popularity of TV programmes like Who Do You Think You Are?, demonstrate our fascination with roots. In some cases it's little more than a curiosity about family background, but in many cultures it reflects a desire, even necessity, to show connectedness and belonging. This was certainly the case for Matthew, as he lays out Jesus' ancestry at the start of his gospel. Crucially, he begins and ends the genealogy with David and Abraham. Jesus is not only the fulfilment of the hopes of a new king on David's throne, but also the one who will extend God's blessings to Gentiles in fulfilment of the promise made to Abraham. But more than this, Matthew's very first words - about the 'genesis' of Jesus Christ - are reminiscent of Genesis 2:4 and 5:1. He is setting the account he is about to tell in the larger story of God's dealings not just with Israel, but with creation, marking a new beginning in that story - a new beginning in Jesus. Why Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba are included in the genealogy remains something of a puzzle. Perhaps Matthew wanted us to note they were all 'foreigners' to Israel, brought within the orbit of the people of God. More significantly, perhaps, is that their unions and childrearing could be seen as outside the 'norm', some even carrying the stigma of sexual scandal. Matthew reminds us - as Joseph will learn in the passage that follows - that God doesn't always work out his purpose within expected boundaries. On the first page of the New Testament, then, the significance of Jesus is seen in the shape of the history of Israel, with all its ups and downs, which goes back through David to Abraham, and has its origins in God's purposes for the whole of creation. And this history becomes our history too, as we are adopted into the family of faith whose roots go back to the very beginning, carefully worked out by God, culminating in Jesus. Here is great encouragement, as the gospel story reminds me of my incredible significance in God's grand design - that I find my identity and purpose, with others, in the one who stands at the heart of God's plan for the universe. Antony Billington

The Abandoned Times: What if Jesus Really Did Commission Us to Make Disciples?

By Dr. David Bjork After thirty years of missionary service in France, Dr Bjork and his wife are now ministering in Cameroon, Africa. Dr Bjork who holds Masters degrees in Missiology, Pastoral Theology, and History of religions, and Doctorate degrees in Religious Science and Theology, is professor of Religious Science at the state university of Yaoundé. It is widely held that the most definitive statement of the mission of the Church is found in the risen Christ’s commissioning of the disciples: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV) Unfortunately, for historical reasons we have interpreted this mandate to mean that we are to go into all the world to plant the church,[i] and the church will make the disciples. But that is not what Jesus said! He specifically gave us the job of making disciples, and He explicitly promised that He would build His church (Mt 16:18). Our task is to make disciples, His responsibility is to build His church. This reversal of roles is the primary reason we are failing to win our world for Christ. Associated with it are many understandings of our mission that hinder us from actually doing what Christ sends us into the world to do. Nearly forty years ago I read an exposition of Ephesians 4:11-13 that greatly impacted me. That study demonstrated that this scriptural text teaches that God has given Spirit-gifted leaders to the church with the sole purpose of discipling (mentoring, training, equipping, coaching, and releasing) God’s people (i.e. lay men and women) so that they can do His work in the world. If it is true that the communication of the Christian faith is primarily the work of Spirit-filled laity and that God ordained leadership serves fundamentally to facilitate, strengthen and empower lay men and women in that task, then we must reconsider much of our current practice. I am convinced, for instance, that the professionalization of the witness of God’s people has silenced much of their communication.[ii] So too has church programming that dominates the schedules of members to the point that there is just no time nor energy left for them to do the very thing they were created for – to really share the same environment as their neighbors in a manner that allows the recognition, familiarity, and “relational endurance”[iii] necessary for authentic and challenging life-transforming encounter. [i] In other places I have written about the development and limits of this “church-centered missional paradigm,” see: David Bjork, Unfamiliar Paths: The Challenge of Recognizing the Work of Christ in Strange Clothing (Pasadena, CA: William Carey Library, 1997), pp. 56-69. [ii] For a historical study of this phenomenon in North America see Roger Finke and Rodney Stark, The Churching of America 1776-1990 (New Brunswick, [NJ]: Rutgers University Press, [1992] 1997). [iii] I borrow this term from Lindy Backues who uses it in opposition to the inability of the modern person to work through the problems of community (“The Incarnation as Motif for Development Practice”, in World Mission in the Wesleyan Spirit, Darrell Whiteman & Gerald Anderson eds. [Franklin, TN: Providence House Publishers, 2009], pp. 310-323).
